There is an old saying in the ProAudio industry: "Its easy to lie with specs (specifications)." For example, an amp that a manufacturer rates at 2000 watts at 1% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) is going to be extremely noisy with static at that output. Another, more reputable company might rate the same amp at 200 watts with less THD. Consumer amplifiers are more likely to have these mis-leading specs than are pro audio amps, but there are some big name pro audio companies out there that still 'lie with specs'.
If reading specifications is like reading greek for you, you can steer clear of the mis-leading manufacturers by purchasing a reputable brand such as QSC. Another alternative would be to email dj@audio-depot.com with the make and model of your speakers and we'll help you choose the right amp for your power requirements.
A common misconception is that if you choose an amplifier that is of lower wattage than your speakers you will avoid blowing them. The opposite is actually true! There isn't space to discuss why here; please email or call Audio-Depot if you need assistance choosing the right amplifier for your needs.
